I had a lovely trip down to Lancing on the English South Coast last week. It was a warm autumn morning, with a pastel blue sky and a light breeze off the sea. We scrunched onto the beach, crested the pebble ridge and looked down towards the sea-shore. There, to our amazement we saw five cormorants perched on the posts of the breakwater, just above the gently swelling waves. The sea birds stood tall and upright, staring out to sea, dwarfing the seagulls that sat further along the groyne. One of the cormorants, stood with his wings outstretched, sleek black feathers drying in the sun. Wonderful to have seen sea birds like these up so close!
