Defining moments

Standing at the crossroads, wondering which way to go, which path to take. Life’s choices, a myriad of possibilities, but once we have stepped onto that path there is no turning back, no rewind. We take that job, we buy that house, we marry that man – for better or for worse. We step forward, not knowing where that choice will eventually take us, not knowing the outcome. We step off the pavement, not knowing if it will be the last time we cross the road.

At other times, we are pushed along, not by choice, but by external things such as redundancy, bereavement or illness, and life has changed in the blink of an eye. We are left reeling, nothing can ever be the same again. Expectations, future plans, all become void, and slowly we pick up the pieces, begin afresh, create a new normal.

Nevertheless, even when all the world appears to be against us, and when it seems we have no choice, we still do have a choice – within us. We can choose how to behave, choose to stand up against it, choose to change direction, choose not to sink but to swim.  And whatever our circumstances, we can make the choice to smile despite them.
